Abigail Avrick

Vinyl and Digital DJing

Abigail Avrick is a DJ and producer who has been performing in DC over the last decade. The Black Cat, DC9, and 618 are among the many venues she’s DJed with a sound incorporating classic house music, footwork, and cutting edge club tracks based on the context of each event. Abi is also responsible for curating a prolific DC-centered mix series (ROOM), while managing the collective’s record label; breaking local talent and pairing emerging artists with experienced engineers.

She has taught many of her friends how to DJ with a philosophy that includes both practice on vinyl turntables and CDJs. While some consider these separate disciplines, she believes a hybrid approach to learning to mix centers the most important skills in DJing. Vinyl practice forces students to train their ears, matching beats without the use of visual cues. It also teaches students to focus on their selection, ultimately one of the most important aspects of the craft. On the other hand, a robust knowledge of digital mixing (on CDJs and/or controllers) can often expand the genres a DJ considers mixing, in addition to making it easier for students to conceptualize the BPMs (beats per minute) of their music (an important consideration for beat matching).

Abi’s often likes to teach DJing with house and club music, as well as anything else students bring to the table. Her lessons also include guidance on acquiring music both physically and digitally.
